Is an Ignition Switch difficult to replace on a 99 Chevy Malibu?

The switch is not mounted in the steering column, so I am hoping that it is not as difficult to work on as others. Car will turn over fine, but engine will not fire. I checked all of the ignition fuses. I have auto-start on my car and it will start the car, but the ignition switch will not register that the key has been set to the 'on' position and the safety feature shuts the car off as soon as the brake pedal is pushed. I'm no expert, but all signs seem to point to a faulty ignition switch. I'm hoping that I can do the repairs myself. Thanks for your help.

  1. sounds like electronic problem if your good about electronics go for it but i would take it to a dealer and put it on the machine
  2. I dont think it is your ignition switch. I am not 100% positive but I believe there was a faulty wire/ wiring in this car that keeps it from starting. Look on google for malibu no start or something smiliar and you should find it rather easily. Please keep in mind if you are not familiar with air bags you should NOT be playing with anything around the dash area as you could trigger your air bag. They are not cheap to replace, and no, disconnecting the battery does not deactivate it, it can still go off. Good luck and be careful
