what "stand clear of hazard areas while engine is running" sign means on the aircraft engine?

Public Comments

  1. Depends on the aircraft: You could be hit by a blade or propeller. You could get sucked into an intake. You could be hit by the engine exhaust or prop wash. All could end up causing death or serious bodily injury.
  2. avoid roughly 90 degrees cones extending forwards from the engine intake and extending backwards from the engine exhaust. avoid the propeller plane.
  3. Depending on the aircraft it means different things. The hazard simply warns people, mechanics for instance, that there is a danger. Aircraft with propellers can not be seen when they are turning, although you will hear the engine running. Turbo jet engines have such a great amount of suction that they will ingest, or suck in, anyone or anything if close enough. Next time you are at an airport notice how the grounds people remove the equipment and persons away from the airplane. The reason is to protect lives and the engine from ingesting anything but air. For instance the older Boeing B737 commercial jet had such great suction that a person would stand behind the engine away from the intake and still the person was ingested into the engine.
  4. it means stay away from the engine if you don't want to get chopped to bits and/or diced and burned to a crisp (if you're dealing w/ jets)
