Why did this wire in my clothes dryer burn up?
Have 30 year old dryer with a bad wire. This wire appears to have come lose from its connection due to burning. So, if I trim off the burned portion ( about an inch ) and reattach it, will it be a fire hazard? In other words, is the burning just from 30 years of use, or is it a sign that something else is wrong? Thanks in advance.

- Do not use the old wire. After a period of time, the coating and insulation on wiring becomes brittle and falls off. You are lucky that you didn't end up with a real fire in your home. Thirty years is a long life for a clothes dryer. It is likely that the rest of the wiring is bad also even if it has not as of yet shorted out. If you can not afford a new dryer, at least replace the wiring with new.
- it is probably just the opposite, that is it burned up because it came loose. as long as no other parts were damaged i would say it is ok to redo the connection and it will be fine. now keep in mind when i say redo i mean do it right so that the connections keeps its integrity.
