Mold - Health Hazard?

Mold and Wall damage in Apartment Question Details: I recently discovered extensive mold on the wall and carpet of my closet in my apartment. Since I had been away on travel, I had not noticed until now. I did notice odd smells in my apt for at least 2-3 weeks now. I had 38 articles of clothing that are completely soaked in mold, smell horrible, and have visible signs. I notified my landlord and they are in the process of "taking care of the problem". The managment company would not let me move into another unit due to the difference in size/rent. They told me they are obligated to fix a problem once they discover it and will give me 1 week rental credit while they fix it. The mold is extensive and extremely gross. What about the potential health hazard it has caused? How do I know for certain that all the mold in the wall and carpet will be gone? Do I get reimbursed for my damaged clothes? I could have been breathing this for serveral weeks/months?? What should I do now?

  1. If you are allergic to mold and have been exposed to it for a long time it can really damage your lungs. If you have CVID and have been exposed you could really be harmed. Sinus infections are a clear tip off, pulmonary problems such as bronchitis and pneumonia are a real tip off. Asthma is another symptom. Most of your regular Dr. do not know how to diagnose CVID and will treat you for symptoms. Go to an Immunologist to find out for sure. I don't know what state you live in, If it is Ca just talk to the landlord about contacting a lawer and I think he will react differently. Mold is being recognized as a real hazard today.
  2. Mold reeks havoc on the lungs. Especially if you are hyper sensitive to it. Please call your apt manager so they can fix the problem. Remove your clothes from that area and really everything from that area. Wash very well with bleach on surfaces that will tolerate. I do not know if mold comes out of clothes. I'd throw them away or have them specially cleaned or perhaps a dry cleaner could help you with that question.
  3. tell them to take care of the problem , but you need to get out. I am positive that if you told them you were going to call health inspectors they might cough up the cash for a hotel. Take pictures if you can in case you end up in a legal dispute. You can get very sick from mold spores from what it sounds like I sure the heck would get out. By the way make them pay for your clothing also and if you are in an apt. what about the unit above and below you? This could be a real hazard. Best of Luck
