I used to have a virus which gave me a red background and it might have left some malware?

I got some malware which gave me a red background with a bio-hazard sign and popups. I got rid of the virus a week ago, but when I use internet explorer, where it says a popup has been blocked on firefoxes, it says "A virus has been detected, click here to have a free spyware scan." Its obviously spy/adware and I was wondering how to take it off.
